Sarasota, and the surrounding area, is filled with an almost endless variety of great restaurants; far too many to list. A few
worth noting are Café L’ Europe and the Columbia (the original has been in Ybor City, Tampa since 1905) on St. Armands
Circle, Euphemia Haye and Pattigeorge’s on Longboat Key, Rustic Grill and the Bijou Café downtown, and Uva Rara in the
Burns Court area. The following is a listing of some of the other places my wife, Leslee, and I like; some for the food, some
for the atmosphere and/or setting, some a combination thereof. Bill Dozier, Unit 11
SARASOTA
Lunch
C’EST LA VIE, 1553 Main St. A little bit of France on Main St. Open for
breakfast and lunch.CITRUS CAFE, Corner of Pineapple and Orange Avenues. Excellent light
fare.NEW PASS GRILLE & BAIT SHOP, 1505 Ken Thompson Pkwy. Have a
burger or sandwich and watch the pelicans vie for the fishermen’s scraps.O’LEARY’S Island Park near Marina Jack. The food isn’t fancy, but the
view of the anchorage and bay is fantastic. Live music too.
Dinner
DIVINO, 1766 Main St. Great food. Classy, but not over the top.CARAGIULO’S, 69 S. Palm Ave. Good Italian food. A great place to sit
outside.SANGRIA, 1532 Main St., Spanish tapas.
Dinner (and maybe a movie)
MEDITERRANEO, 1970 Main St. Great food. Directly across from the
Hollywood 20 Movie Theater.5 ONE 6 BURNS, 516 Burns Court. Next to the Burns Court Cinema. The
food is great, plus they’ve got a wood-fired pizza oven in the bar area.
LESS THAN AN HOUR AWAY
OLD FLORIDA PLACES (on the water too)
STAR FISH CO., village of Cortez. A working fish market with picnic tables
on the dock out back. Great fresh seafood. Look for the flock of white
pelicans.MAR VISTA, 760 Broadway, north end of Longboat Key. Lunch, or dinner
while it’s still daylight. Get a picnic table under the buttonwood trees at the
waters edge.CASEY KEY FISHHOUSE, Blackburn Point Rd. (between the two bridges),
Osprey. No AC, but there’s usually a breeze. The grilled calamari salad is
fantastic!SPANISH POINT MARINA, on the bay front in Osprey. The food is only
average, but the deck is right on the bay. Great sunsets.SNOOK HAVEN, east of Venice where Venice Ave. runs into the Myakka
River. Average food, but a beautiful canopy dirt road gets you to the river, and
back in time. Canoes for rent. Live music too.
LONGBOAT KEY
A MOVEABLE FEAST, north end of the island in the Whitney Beach Plaza.
A small restaurant, but one with great food and a charming atmosphere.
ANNA MARIA ISLAND
THE WATERFRONT, corner of Bay Blvd. and Spring St., Anna Maria (north
end of the island). Outstanding food at reasonable prices. Indoor and outdoor
seating overlooking Tampa Bay and the Sunshine Skyway.SPORTFISH GRILLE, in the strip mall at the corner of Gulf Dr. and Marina
Dr., Holmes Beach. Great seafood and Mexican fare. Try the fish tacos.SKINNY’S, Gulf Dr., just south of Manatee Ave, Holmes Beach. There’s
nothing else like it! The place looks like it may fall down, but the burgers
are great and the beer mugs are ice cold.DUFFY’S TAVERN, Marina Dr. (across from City Hall), Holmes Beach. It
used to be where Skinny’s is now, but they lost the lease. Now a newer
version in a converted gas station. Still great burgers and ice cold beer.
Adding to Bill’s list, David and Stacey Yager (23A) recommend:
If you like sushi, you will love Pacific Rim (in the Hillview “strip”). Their cooked food is equally as desirable. Reservations
highly recommended for four or more people, especially on the weekends. Outdoor seating is civilized. The sushi roll
choices are extensive.
Just across the street in Hillview is Table—very entertaining. The food and singles scene are both sizzling. The menu is
ambitious and delivers high quality food in a fun, hip and adult atmosphere.
Heading downtown? Try The Selva Grill and Martini Bar. Start off with one their unusual martinis or mojitos and sample one
of their ceviches or ambitious South American cuisine that is superbly presented. This is another great place to sip, nibble
and people-watch. If you get there early and you want something to do, step into the neighboring bookstore and coffee bar.
If you want to walk off your dinner, stroll over to Maximo’s for a combination of Mediterranean and South African cuisine
both prepared spicy and served on a wrap-around porch. Try the traditional injera bread with their curries—made on site
and definitely memorable.
